In Italian, a “still life” is known as a “natura morta” (literally, “dead nature”), though the English expression has become more popular. The stylistic features are the same: plant elements, floral and natural elements, glass or wicker objects and, peeking out, the tempus fugit element. Painting and photography merge in Liddi’s works, with oil paints lighting up the compositions recreated in the studio which – thanks to the emotional impact of photography – regain a shape at once ancient and modern. Featuring the irrepressible influence of 17th-century Flemish painters.
