After many years as a set photographer, Luciano Rossetti knows he has just a few shots to sum up the expanded duration of a performance and convey its sounds, smells, lights. He owes his style – a combination of starkness and intuition – to a lengthy and successful career as a jazz photographer, but it is his curiosity that draws us into the behind-the-scenes that he records from his privileged position. Thus, we observe his close-ups of the actors’ faces; the way he lingers on details or expands his field of view to encompass the whole; his scanning the darkness, fully aware that it is a sphere requiring both modesty and boldness, because actors want you to be humble, yet praise your daring.
