João Coelho’s intense reportage takes us to Angola, the photographer’s native land. In particular, we land on the beach of Mabangas, which takes its name from a common shellfish much appreciated as an aperitif. The molluscs are opened by the
industrious hands of women who work to scrape together money at the local market, and what remains are the shells that fill the beach. The children transform this place into an amusement park, with imagination, inventiveness, and a desire to transform into a splendid toy something that, to our eye, is just waste.
